Brent Complex: The Global Oil Benchmark Ecosystem

The Brent Complex is far more than a single price — it is a layered, interconnected system of physical markets, financial contracts, and derivatives that together form the world's most influential crude oil benchmark, underpinning pricing for roughly 80% of globally traded crude.

Adapting to Evolution

As legacy North Sea fields naturally deplete, the Brent Complex has remained resilient by expanding its underlying basket of grades — ensuring the benchmark stays liquid and globally representative.

The BFOET Basket & Beyond

The system now incorporates five North Sea grades — Brent, Forties, Oseberg, Ekofisk, and Troll (BFOET) — and most recently WTI Midland from the US Gulf Coast, broadening the benchmark's physical foundation.

Why It Matters

Each addition prevents a structural decline in available cargoes. By refreshing the basket, the complex maintains the volume and diversity needed to reflect genuine global supply conditions and resist price manipulation.
